All About Denim Fabric

Denim Fabric is a rugged cotton twill textile. The weft fiber (the horizontal threads) pass under two warp fibers (the lengthwise threads), giving the back side of the fabric a diagonal ribbing.

Denim Fabric is most often thought of as the fabric of Blue Jeans. Well, that's a story right out of the Gold Rush! When Levi Strauss headed to San Francisco to open a dry goods business, it was pants that miners wanted. Seizing the moment, young Levi had course canvas intended for tents and wagon covers turned into pants. Soon after he started using a heavy French fabric for the pants and the age of blue jeans was born.

In the 1930's, Movies with cowboys wearing denim jeans increased the popularity of Denim Fabric. In the 1950's, the movie Rebel Without a Cause with James Dean gave blue jeans a rebellious reputation. Eventually, designers took hold of Denim Fabric and it entered the mainstream of the fashion world to stay.
