What Are Knit Fabrics and How Are They Made?

Knit fabrics are textiles made from interlocking loops of yarn, giving them natural stretch, flexibility, and softness. Unlike woven fabrics, which are made by crisscrossing threads, knits are made by looping yarns together in a single direction—either by hand (like in sweaters) or by machine for apparel and other uses.

Knit fabrics are commonly made from cotton, polyester, rayon, bamboo, wool, or spandex blends, and are ideal for stretchy, comfortable garments like T-shirts, leggings, dresses, underwear, and activewear.

Types of Knit Fabrics and Their Uses

 Jersey Knit Lightweight and smooth with good stretch and drape. Best for: T-shirts, dresses, baby clothes. Also known as: cotton jersey, rayon jersey, stretch jersey, single knit fabric

Rib Knit Raised vertical lines with excellent stretch and recovery. Best for: Neckbands, cuffs, waistbands, fitted tops. Also known as: rib knit fabric, 2x2 rib, stretch ribbing

Interlock Knit Double-knit fabric that's thicker and more stable than jersey. Best for: Dresses, skirts, structured tops, baby clothes. Also known as: interlock fabric, double knit cotton, stable knit fabric

French Terry Knit fabric with soft loops on the back and smooth surface on the front. Best for: Sweatshirts, hoodies, joggers, casual wear. Also known as: French terry knit, loopback fabric, lightweight sweatshirt fabric

Sweater Knit Chunky or fine knit with a textured, often cozy appearance. Best for: Cardigans, pullovers, scarves, cold-weather garments. Also known as: sweater knit fabric, textured knit, soft knit fabric

Ponte de Roma (Ponte Knit) Thick, stable double knit with minimal stretch and a smooth finish. Best for: Pants, skirts, dresses, blazers. Also known as: ponte knit fabric, ponte de roma, structured knit

Lycra/Spandex/Performance Knit High-stretch knit with excellent shape retention. Best for: Activewear, swimwear, leggings, dancewear. Also known as: stretch knit fabric, spandex knit, athletic fabric
