Hemp Fabric
What Is Hemp Fabric and How Is It Made?
Hemp fabric is a strong, breathable, and eco-friendly textile made from the stalks of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). Known for its durability, natural texture, and sustainability, hemp is one of the oldest fibers used in textiles and has regained popularity in modern fashion and home décor. To make hemp fabric, the fibrous stalks of the hemp plant are harvested and retted (soaked to break down the pectin that binds the fibers), then decorticated to separate the inner fiber from the woody core. The fibers are cleaned, carded, spun into yarn, and woven into fabric. The result is a strong, breathable, and moisture-wicking fabric that softens with every wash. Hemp fabric is often blended with cotton, linen, or other natural fibers to enhance softness and versatility. It’s ideal for clothing, bags, upholstery, home textiles, and sustainable sewing projects.
