What Is Cupro Fabric and How Is It Made?

Cupro is a sustainable, semi-synthetic fabric made from regenerated cellulose fibers, specifically cotton linter — the fine, silky fibers that surround cotton seeds. Often called "vegan silk," cupro has a smooth, luxurious texture, excellent drape, and breathable, moisture-wicking properties, making it ideal for blouses, dresses, linings, and flowy garments. To make cupro, cotton linter is dissolved in a copper-ammonia solution, then spun into fibers through a process similar to rayon or viscose production. The result is a biodegradable, eco-friendly fabric that feels like silk but is easier to care for and more affordable. Cupro is popular in high-end fashion and sustainable sewing, offering the comfort of natural fibers with a refined, elegant finish.
