This traditional dress worn by nomadic women in Afghanistan is ideal for mixing fabrics and embellishments. This dress has an extremely full skirt and sleeves. It is traditionally worn ankle length but can be adapted to a shorter variation. The raised bodice is fitted and connects to the skirt by the front waistband and underarm gussets. The neck opening can be placed at the front or back. Although, the opening is traditionally worn to the back. The skirt is gathered by a double line of even stitches, forming tiny, unpressed pleats. The back of the skirt has two tiers and fabric can be mixed or sewn of one kind.
There are three optional bodice embroidery treatments, using chain stitch, mirror cloth, and satin stitch which are all authentic detailing.
Suggested fabrics: Soft, medium-weight fabrics such as cotton, rayon challis, or silk; the upper sleeve and/or skirt may be of a soft rayon or silk velvet. This dress is often made in many prints, which is a wonderful opportunity to use up bits and pieces of brilliant fabrics.

I made this in 1973. One of my first SCA outfits Even did the embroidery and the fringe sash. If you follow the instructions for the embroidery and use multiple layers of fabric it makes it really hot. I would recommend Lacy's Stiff Stuff instead. And forget the fringe thing. It was a pain in the you know what and the dress really didn't need it. Pay attention to how you are attaching the skirt and bodice. I put it on backwards. Twice. It's still backwards. Other than these minor problems, I LOVED wearing this dress! Made me feel like i was really there! Wish it still fit!
