Misses (Small - XLarge); Men's 34-48
Patterns and sewing instructions are included for three versatile and comfortable garments – the Hippari, sized for men and women; Monpei, or field pants, for women; and Padded Jacket for women. All are constructed in a time-honored way.
The Hippari is a hip-length jacket that overlaps in front and ties at the side. Its front opening is finished with a neckband. Two different elbow-length sleeves are given: for women, a rectangular sleeve with small traditional openings under the arms in both sleeve and body; for men, sleeves are tapered, with no underarm opening.
The calf-length Field Pants have pleats at the waist below back and front waistbands that wrap and tie. Roomy gussets at the crotch allow full ease of movement; leg hems are finished with elastic. There is a patch pocket on the right front hip.
The Padded Jacket has a straight front opening and neckband. Construction includes an outer layer, batting, and a short contrasting lining. The curved sleeves (which can also be used, unpadded, on the Hippari), have traditional underarm openings.
Suggested fabrics: For Hippari and Field Pants, choose medium-weight tightly woven materials such as cotton, lightweight denim, or silk. Traditional Japanese fabrics are usually indigo-dyed ikat weave or striped cotton in blue, black, gray, or brown. For a Padded Jacket, choose light to medium-weight cotton, silk, or rayon, or lightweight wool.
