The Willamette by Hey June is a casual boxy dolman popover shirt in three views. View A features a shirt tail hem, while View B adds a twist with a waist seam for fun opportunities with colorblocking and playful stripe direction. View C is a cropped version, perfect for pairing with high waisted jeans. All views feature a straight fit at the sides, while the back yoke with three styles of pleats adds to the breezy style. Interchangeable features include optional button in the placket for increased modesty, hemmed cap sleeves or sleeve cuffs, and chest pockets.
This laid-back take on the button-up top is great for beginner sewists to try before tackling more elaborate shirt stylings, or for sewists of any level who want the look of a classic shirt with simplified sewing for quicker construction. If you’ve been working your way up to a traditional shirt placket, the Willamette is a great stepping stone: the “placket” is actually just a faced and overlapped front, which makes for very easy sewing! The collar on the Willamette is sandwiched between the shirt and facing, so there’s no need to sew a collar stand or ease in a collar, another great feature for advanced beginners. The dolman style sleeves mean there’s no setting-in traditional sleeves, or applying binding to a sleeveless top. Seams are enclosed or sewn with a French seam for a consistent finish at all sewing levels.
Recommended Fabrics:
Lightweight woven fabric such as rayon, voile, lawn, shirting, and gauze.
Notions:
-1 yard lightweight fusible non-woven interfacing (like Pellon 906F)
-one 1/2" button (optional)
Sizes: 2-22
Difficulty: Advanced Beginner
